Simple and Delicious: Cinnamon Bun Icing
The Sweet Finish: A Simple Icing for Cinnamon Buns That Feels Like Home
There’s something undeniably comforting about a tray of warm cinnamon buns fresh from the oven. But let’s be honest—what truly makes them irresistible is that soft, sweet drizzle of icing that melts into every golden swirl.
At Old Simcoe Sourdough, we believe in keeping things simple and honest ingredients you can pronounce, and recipes that bring you back to your grandmother’s kitchen or the corner bakery in a small-town main street.
Today I’m sharing our go-to icing for cinnamon buns. It’s easy to make, beautifully smooth, and just the right amount of sweet. Whether you're baking for a quiet Sunday morning or a family brunch, this icing is the final touch that ties everything together.
Simple Vanilla Icing for Cinnamon Buns
Ingredients:
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk (or cream for a richer glaze)
½ teaspoon real vanilla extract
A tiny pinch of salt (optional, but it rounds out the sweetness beautifully)
How To Make It:
In a small bowl, stir together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth and glossy. Add the vanilla and salt, then whisk again until silky. If it feels too thick, add a few more drops of milk. If it’s too thin, a spoonful of sugar will bring it back to perfect.
Drizzle the icing generously over your warm cinnamon buns and let the magic happen.
Tips from the Hearth:
Swap in maple extract for a fall twist.
Add a tablespoon of cream cheese for tangy richness (especially good if you're serving them cool).
Want to keep it dairy-free? Use almond or oat milk—both work beautifully.
There’s beauty in the little things: a wooden spoon, a kitchen that smells like cinnamon, and a drizzle of icing over something made with care. May this recipe bring that feeling to your kitchen.
Happy baking,
